AN INTERNSHIP ABROAD

Aspiring designers vying for the top places in the Singapore Fashion Designers Contest (SFDC) and the Asian Young Fashion Designers Contest (AYFDC) have very attractive prizes waiting for them. Apart from winning the top cash prizes of S$8,000 each (runner-ups get S$4,000 and S$2,000 respectively), there is also an internship programme tied in with the first prize winners.

For both contests, design submissions are presented as twelve female outfits, or twelve male outfits, or the combination of six female and six male outfits. Each submission included inspiration boards, sketchbook or working journal and illustrations with graphics, sketches, swatches and colour schemes.

The closing date for SFDC was 4 June 2007, and 14 June for AYFDC. 8 finalists were selected for each contest following interviews and practical assessments. The selection panel was made up of veterans from the industry. Judging criteria is based on rack appeal, workmanship, choice of fabrics and use of accessories, development of design concept, creativity and originality.
